Fane of Nyrro
Faction Overview: Fane of Nyrro
The Fane of Nyrro is the newest faction within the larger Dusk (Empire of Dusk) army in Warmachine. While the main Dusk faction (House Kallyss) uses traditional steam-powered warjacks and Focus mechanics, the Fane of Nyrro splits off into a "Hordes-style" system. They trade mechanical constructs for horrific, mind-controlled warbeasts and utilize Fury and a bespoke mechanic called Hunger.
Visually and textually, they lean heavily into a dark, gothic fantasy/vampiric aesthetic—think armored Elven vampires leading ravening swarms of winged nightmares.
Core Playstyle & Mechanics
The Fane of Nyrro is a highly aggressive, front-line army. They operate under a "King piece" design philosophy: your Warlock is a massive powerhouse that projects a terrifying aura, slightly empowering weaker supporting pieces around them.
1. The Hunger Pool
This is the faction's defining unique mechanic. Unlike standard resources that clear out every round, Hunger is an unlimited pool that carries over from turn to turn.
-
Shared Resource: Your Warlock builds the Hunger pool (primarily by destroying enemy models or through the Torment status effect).
-
Eldritch Network: Any Eldritch model in your army can spend points out of the Warlock’s central Hunger pool to cast the leader's specific Hunger powers. This allows your entire army to act as conduits for your Warlock's raw power.
2. Shadow Shift
Fane of Nyrro Warlocks are inherently tricky to assassinate thanks to this universal baseline ability.
-
For 3 Hunger points, when your Warlock is hit by an enemy attack, you can completely blank the damage by teleporting base-to-base with a friendly model within 4 inches.
-
The friendly model is removed from play instead. It makes pinning down your leader an absolute nightmare for opponents trying to score a quick assassination victory.
3. The Torment Condition
This faction introduces a unique token condition called Torment. When applied to enemy models (50mm base size or smaller), it completely shuts down their ability to heal and harvests 1 Hunger point for your Warlock during the maintenance phase.
Key Units & Entry Points
If you are looking to start a Fane of Nyrro army, your primary building blocks will be the command starter set and its accompanying boxes:
Executioner's Toll (Command Starter)
This provides a 30-point standalone force perfect for getting a handle on the army's core rules.
-
Hysene, the Executioner (Warlock): A brutal front-line combatant boasting an exceptional Melee Attack (MAT 8). She uses spells like Dash to increase unit threat ranges, Deceleration to protect her army against ranged attacks on the approach, and Gallows to drag enemy models directly into her blade.
-
Sybaris: A character heavy warbeast that generates Hunger points directly when removing enemy models from play.
-
Fane Knights & Sythyss Prophet: A heavily armored unit of traditional Elven knights paired with a unit attachment (the Prophet) capable of returning dead knights back to life—synergizing perfectly with your Shadow Shift sacrifices.
-
Strygon Rider: A fast, flying solo that thrives when staying within 10 inches of your aggressive Warlock.
Supplemental Releases
-
Strygon (Light Warbeast): Small, airborne predators that act as agile conduits for your Warlock’s will. They have access to Echolocation, allowing them to ignore Line of Sight restrictions when charging.
-
Vordak (Heavy Warbeast): A hulking, horrific monster that features customizable weapon loadouts and the Home Back ability, allowing it to advance back toward its commander even after entering a Frenzy.
-
Death's Whisper (Army Box): The primary expansion box to take your command force into larger-scale games, introducing a wider selection of units and strategic options.
Pros & Cons for New Players
Pros:
Stunning Aesthetic: If you love gothic horror, vampires, and monstrous bats, this is arguably the coolest looking faction line in MK4.
High-Quality Materials: Unlike early MK4 kits, these models are produced in a highly detailed 3D-printed resin that features a slight flexibility, preventing them from shattering if accidentally dropped.
Assassination Insurance: Shadow Shift gives new players a crucial safety net against veteran players who are experts at finding sudden, unexpected lines to kill your Warlock.
Cons:
High Cognitive Load: Because the Hunger mechanic, Torment rules, and shared abilities are entirely bespoke to this specific sub-faction, you have a lot of extra tokens and rules to track.
Centralized Weakness: Because your power is concentrated heavily on your Warlock, spreading your forces out too far across the battlefield can leave your units isolated and statistically weaker.
